Rocket Fiber Announces Grosse Pointe Expansion
- Rocket Fiber awarded RFP to construct Fiber Optic Network for Grosse Pointe Public School System
- Partnership provides catalyst for future launch of Rocket Fiber services in Grosse Pointe and along the East Jefferson corridor in Detroit
October 28, [DETROIT] – Rocket Fiber, Detroit’s fastest and most-reliable internet service provider, today announced that it has been awarded an RFP to construct a new Fiber Optic Internet Network for the Grosse Pointe Public School System (GPPSS). The state-of-the-art Fiber Network will connect all of the district’s school buildings and deliver a 300+ percent increase to current connection speeds.
“We are excited to work with Grosse Pointe Schools as we build out their new fiber network,” said Marc Hudson, Co-founder & CEO of Rocket Fiber. “An investment in a robust internet infrastructure demonstrates the district’s strategy of offering innovative learning models using technology. We are proud to be their partner on this important initiative as it aligns perfectly with our mission to provide a faster and friendlier internet experience.”
The contract was awarded this month and is estimated for completion prior to the start of the 2020 school year. Under the contract, Rocket Fiber will design and build a Fiber Optic Network and provide GPPSS with:
- Approximately 40 miles of new fiber network owned by the district
- 10Gbps internet at no charge for 15 years
- Free maintenance on the fiber network for 20 years
“We’re pleased to be on the path to reaching this critical threshold for our district,” said Dr. Gary C. Niehaus, Superintendent of the Grosse Pointe Public School System, adding, “The call of 21st century learning, which is enabled through digital infrastructure and connectivity, can only be answered with fiber.”
Benefit to the Community
As part of the partnership, GPPSS will allow Rocket Fiber to construct extra fiber expanding from the initial fiber ring. Rocket Fiber plans to utilize these excess fibers to make Rocket Fiber Services available along the East Jefferson corridor in Detroit as well as the Grosse Pointe communities.
“This partnership allows us to quickly and efficiently bring fiber internet to areas that had previously been limited in their internet options,” Hudson continued. “It is a big win for the community, and is a proven public-private partnership model that we are discussing with other local districts interested in future-proofing their digital infrastructure.”
During the installation, there will be ample opportunity for businesses and residents along the corridor to connect to Rocket Fiber. Those interested in exploring options can do so by contacting Rocket Fiber at email@example.com.
Benefit to Higher Education
GPPSS will immediately triple its internet speed (currently at 3Gbps, up to 10Gbps through Rocket Fiber) and own a future-proof fiber network interconnecting its school buildings. In addition, they will have access to excess fiber lines that can be used to connect with other Grosse Pointe communities or even leased for additional revenue streams.
Under the contract, Rocket Fiber will provide GPPSS with free operational and maintenance support for 20 years, significantly reducing fiber complexities and upfront costs.
“Thinking ahead to a future where graduates of Grosse Pointe Public School System are at a distinct advantage resulting from the technology-enabled education received here,” further says Niehaus, “requires the speed and bandwidth that Rocket Fiber will deliver to the district. Our district has always been known for its strength in traditional teaching and learning. That will now be enhanced through high-tech curricular tools, supported through a Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, model which we could only achieve with this infrastructure. This is where we are headed in GPPSS.”
Grosse Pointe Schools that will benefit from Rocket Fiber internet include:
- Contract valued at $2 million and will provide 10Gbps internet to 14 school buildings.
- School buildings will be on their own mesh-based fiber optic network.
- The newly installed fiber cables have an estimated life span of 25 years and will enhance GPPSS services for years to come.
- Installation will expand Rocket Fiber’s network along East Jefferson and increase overall serviceability reach in the metro-Detroit area.
